Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

What Is Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)?

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects how the brain processes sound. People with APD can hear sounds clearly, but their brain struggles to interpret and make sense of what they hear, especially in noisy environments. This can lead to difficulties with understanding speech, following instructions, and distinguishing similar sounds.

Signs & Symptoms of APD

APD can affect children and adults, often impacting learning, social interactions, and daily communication.

Common signs include:

  • Difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments
  • Trouble following multi-step instructions
  • Frequently mishearing or asking for repetition (“What?” or “Huh?”)
  • Struggles with distinguishing similar sounds (e.g., “cat” vs. “cap”)
  • Poor listening skills despite normal hearing ability
  • Difficulty remembering verbal information
  • Challenges with reading and spelling
