Understanding Tinnitus

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing, or other sounds in the ears when no external sound is present. It can be constant or intermittent and vary in intensity. While tinnitus itself is not a disease, it is often a symptom of an underlying hearing condition or exposure to loud noise.

Common Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can result from various factors, including:

  • Hearing Loss – Age-related or noise-induced hearing loss is a common trigger.
  • Loud Noise Exposure – Prolonged exposure to loud sounds (concerts, machinery, headphones) can damage inner ear cells.
  • Earwax Build-up – Blockage in the ear canal can amplify internal sounds.
  • Medications – Certain drugs, including high doses of aspirin or antibiotics, may contribute to tinnitus.
  • Ear & Sinus Infections – Congestion or inflammation can cause temporary tinnitus.
  • Jaw & Neck Issues (TMJ Disorders) – Misalignment in the jaw can affect the auditory system.
  • Stress & Anxiety – High stress levels can exacerbate tinnitus perception.
